About Murphy

Debt collection is still one of the most manual processes in finance: costly call centers, rigid scripts and a long tail of small-ticket debts that are not worth chasing and end up written off. Murphy, a startup based in Barcelona, is trying to replace that chain with conversational AI agents that contact borrowers in arrears, verify their identity, assess what they can afford and agree a repayment plan within limits set by the creditor. Northzone, which led the round, describes debt servicing as a global industry of more than $300 billion that is ripe for disruption. The product is an omnichannel platform. According to the company website, the voice agent has a median reply time under 0.6 seconds and works alongside WhatsApp, SMS, RCS, email and a self-service portal where the customer can review and pay the plan. A contact strategy picks timing and frequency for each person, while configurable negotiation rules define which payment options are allowed. Every call gets an automated compliance score against local regulation and the client's own rules, and each agreement stays linked to its recording. The platform connects to dialers and CRMs or runs on file exchange, and it can be deployed on the client's servers, in a private cloud or on Murphy's own infrastructure. The company was founded in 2024: the press says late 2024, and Borja Solé Fauria's Crunchbase profile gives November 2024. Solé Fauria is co-founder and CEO; according to Northzone, he lived the pain of handling thousands of micro-invoices first-hand while working as a CFO. The CTO and co-founder is Marc Sánchez, who per Northzone built large-scale communications infrastructure at Twilio. The current website also lists a third co-founder, Dmitry Zlokazov, as CPO, who does not appear in the 2025 coverage. On 14 July 2025 Murphy came out of stealth announcing $15 million (about EUR 12.8 million), made up of a $2 million pre-seed and a $13 million seed. Northzone led, with ElevenLabs, Lakestar, Seedcamp, Enzo Ventures and existing investors. The money is meant to build the product, grow the technical and go-to-market teams and expand in Europe and the United States. In its 2025 announcements the company claimed recovery rates about 40% higher and collection times 75% shorter than traditional methods, plus hundreds of millions of dollars in debt already handled for banks, telecoms, utilities and mobility companies in Europe. These are company claims, not independently verified. The 2026 website cites 14 markets, 25 languages, more than 150,000 communications a day, and hubs in London and Dubai. A blog post describes a 90-day pilot with a tier-1 Spanish bank on accounts 0 to 90 days in arrears, in which Murphy reportedly recovered 81% against 77% for the bank's own call center. That figure also comes from the company. Why it matters: Murphy is a concrete case of voice AI agents deployed in a regulated, high-volume process, where compliance, traceability and measurable results count for more than technical novelty. The main risk is that its edge depends on banks and regulators trusting an AI agent to hold the conversation with the debtor.

The Story

Founded in 2024 in Barcelona by Borja Solé Fauria (CEO) and Marc Sánchez (CTO); the company website lists Dmitry Zlokazov (CPO) as a third co-founder. It emerged from stealth on 14 July 2025 with a $15M round.

How Murphy works

Business Model

B2B software for banks, lenders, telecoms, utilities and collection agencies: the platform can run on the client's servers, in a private cloud or on Murphy's cloud, with dedicated deployment engineers handling integration.

Revenue Model

Pricing is not public. The company pitches a claimed cost saving (up to 60% lower than collection agencies and in-house teams) at equal or better recovery rates.

How Murphy competes

Competitive Advantages

  • Median voice AI reply time under 0.6 seconds, according to the website
  • Automated compliance scoring of every call and traceable agreements, instead of sample-based checks
  • Flexible deployment: on the client's servers, in a private cloud or on Murphy's cloud
  • Claimed coverage of 14 markets and 25 languages with local regulatory rules built in
  • Claimed results: +40% recovery and -75% collection time in 2025; 81% against 77% recovery for a bank's call center in the pilot

How Murphy grows

Growth Strategy

According to the 2025 announcements, use the round to broaden multilingual capabilities, automation and compliance tooling, grow the technical and go-to-market teams and expand in Europe and the United States; it now runs hubs in London and Dubai alongside its Barcelona base.

Distribution Model

Direct enterprise sales to financial institutions and service companies, with guided onboarding and dedicated deployment engineers; the platform integrates with dialers and CRMs or through file exchange.

Moat (Defensibility)

The moat is not stated by the company. The levers cited (low latency, built-in compliance and audit, dialer and CRM integration) can be copied; in our editorial view, the advantage will rest on performance data accumulated with clients and on the depth of integrations.

Regulatory Context

Debt collection is a regulated activity, with local rules on contact hours, call recording and disclosures to the debtor. Murphy says it builds in these rules for each jurisdiction, is GDPR compliant and aligned with the EU AI Act, and cites ISO 27001 and SOC 2; these statements come from the company website.

Key Risks

  • Dependence on banks and regulators trusting an AI agent to contact debtors
  • Regulatory and reputational risk: a compliance error in a single call can have legal consequences
  • Performance metrics are company-reported and not verified by third parties
  • Concentration on a few large enterprise clients with long sales and integration cycles
  • Competition from collections platforms and other voice AI agents, not systematically analysed in this profile

Strategic Insights

  • Small-ticket debt has poor economics with traditional call centers: that is the space where an AI agent can make worthwhile what is abandoned today.
  • ElevenLabs, a voice AI provider, is among the investors: a sign of the voice sector's interest in vertical applications.
  • Compliance is presented as part of the product, with automated scoring of every call and traceable agreements, because in this market the trust of banks and regulators is the condition for selling.
  • In under two years the company went from stealth to a claimed offer across 14 markets and 25 languages, with hubs in London and Dubai beside Barcelona.

Lessons from Murphy

  • Starting from a problem lived first-hand (handling thousands of micro-invoices, per Northzone) helps pick a narrow, measurable use case.
  • In a regulated sector, turning compliance and audit into product features reduces friction with enterprise clients.
  • Measuring impact against the client's own internal benchmark, as in the Spanish bank pilot, makes the value proposition more credible.
  • A founding team mixing finance and communications engineering got to first customers before coming out of stealth.
