Listen to the episodeAbout Kalipso
Kalipso is a regtech company based in Barcelona, founded in 2025 by Pierre Ferran (CEO) and Virginia Debernardi (COO). Ferran holds a law degree and an LL.M. from Stanford and is also a software engineer, a rare combination central to the company's value proposition; he previously held senior legal roles at Klarna and Philips while also writing code. Debernardi served as general counsel at Productsup. The platform brings the entire regulatory process into a single system: when new rules emerge, Kalipso identifies the relevant obligations for each organisation, maps them to current policies, highlights any gaps, and creates ready-to-use solutions with clear links back to the original rules, assigning responsibility and including audit tools. The platform tracks over 100 regulatory sources across more than 40 countries and processes over 3,000 updates daily, supporting frameworks such as DORA, MiCAR, PSD2, the AI Act, GDPR and MiFID II; it is ISO 27001-certified and stores data on European cloud servers. In June 2026 it raised $3.2M led by Varsity, the seed fund co-founded by Didier Valet, former deputy CEO of Societe Generale, with participation from Lanai, Plug and Play, Kima Ventures and Vento. Early customers include Groupe Caisse des Depots in France and Alma. Kalipso plans to hire through 2026 and expand into the UK, France, Spain, Italy and the Benelux region.

Regulatory Context
Operates across rapidly evolving European regulatory frameworks: DORA, MiCAR, PSD2, the AI Act, GDPR, and MiFID II.
Key Risks
- Limited runway ($3.2M) relative to slow adoption timelines of regulated enterprise customers
- Rapidly consolidating regtech market with larger players acquiring competitors
- Dependence on the trust of conservative enterprise customers toward a young startup
- Round type not specified, possible uncertainty about maturity stage
Strategic Insights
- Founders with both legal and engineering skills solve a handoff problem most regtech teams fail to bridge.
- The regtech market is consolidating quickly (CUBE's and Corlytics' acquisitions): being end-to-end infrastructure, not just an alert feed, is a defensible position.
- Investors with direct operating experience in the regulated sector (such as a former bank deputy CEO) credibly validate the value proposition with conservative enterprise buyers.

Key Metrics
Lessons from Kalipso
- A rare founder skill combination (legal + engineering) can become the product's moat itself.
- In slow-adopting, regulated markets, a single angel investor with sector credibility can be worth more than several generalist funds.
- Certifications like ISO 27001 and European data residency are not technical details but sales requirements for regulated customers.
