AI Startups in Europe

The EU AI Act — the world's first comprehensive AI regulation — is simultaneously a compliance burden and a strategic moat. European AI startups that build responsibly from day one face lower friction when selling into regulated industries: healthcare, finance, critical infrastructure and government. This is a genuine competitive advantage over US startups that must retrofit compliance later. European AI talent is also disproportionately strong: four of the world's top ten AI research universities are in Europe, and the continent produces more AI PhDs annually than the United States. The open-source AI movement is largely European — from Hugging Face (founded in France, now based in New York) to Mistral, the organisations building public AI infrastructure are mostly headquartered in Europe.
