Listen to the episodeAbout Remote
Remote was founded in 2019 to solve one of the most persistent administrative challenges in global business: the legal and operational complexity of hiring employees in countries where a company has no established local presence. Its platform functions as infrastructure for international employment, allowing companies to hire full-time staff and contractors in more than 60 countries without the time and capital cost of establishing their own legal entities in each jurisdiction โ a process that can take months and tens of thousands of dollars before a single person is brought on board. The platform handles the entire employment stack in every supported country: payroll processing, income tax filings, mandatory social contributions, statutory benefits, equity management, and compliance with local labor laws that vary enormously in their requirements, their enforcement, and their consequences for non-compliance. For a startup that wants to hire a software engineer in Brazil, a customer success manager in Japan, or a sales director in Germany, Remote manages everything that would otherwise require retaining local lawyers, payroll processors, and HR consultants in each country โ an overhead that most growing companies cannot sustain for distributed teams of modest size. Remote's key point of differentiation from many of its employer-of-record competitors is structural: it owns its own legal entities and compliance infrastructure in every country it serves, rather than relying on networks of local third-party partners. This approach requires more capital to build and more time to establish geographic coverage, but it gives the company direct control over service quality, pricing consistency, and the reliability of the compliance guarantees it makes to customers. For companies placing their employment obligations in Remote's hands, that ownership of the infrastructure rather than resale of a partner's infrastructure is commercially meaningful. The pandemic dramatically accelerated the relevance of Remote's model. As companies learned that distributed teams were not just tolerable but often preferable, and as the talent market went global, the demand for infrastructure that makes cross-border hiring tractable became acute. Remote was well-positioned to capture that demand and grew accordingly. In 2022, Remote raised $300 million in a Series C led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2, valuing the company at nearly $3 billion. By 2025, total fundraising exceeded $500 million, and the product had expanded to include AI-powered recruitment tools, contractor management workflows, and equity administration capabilities โ building toward a comprehensive platform for the globally distributed workforce that the modern knowledge economy continues to generate at scale.
