About Orbem
Orbem GmbH is headquartered in Munich and was founded in 2019 as a spin-off of the Munich Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the Technical University of Munich. Its co-founders are Pedro Gรณmez (CEO), Maria Laparidou (CSO) and Miguel Molina (CPTO). The company pairs magnetic resonance imaging with artificial intelligence to examine biological material from the inside, without cutting or damaging it, starting in poultry and aiming at other foods and, in time, human health. Its most mature product is Genus Focus, developed with Vencomatic Group, which determines an embryo's sex in the egg on day 11 or 12 of incubation without piercing the shell, in under a second per egg. It is one of the in-ovo sexing technologies that make it possible to avoid culling male chicks. Genus Scale instead identifies unfertilised eggs before incubation. According to the company, more than 170 million eggs had been scanned by January 2026 and about 250 million by September 2026, with 11 customers in six countries across Europe and the United States. Fruit inspection followed in 2026: with the Spanish grower JimboFresh, Orbem announced the Genus Echo system in May to check watermelons from skin to core. In healthcare, the company so far speaks only of building a large biological dataset for AI models. Regulation is pushing the market: according to Orbem's newsroom, Germany and France banned chick culling in 2022, Italy will do so from 1 January 2027, and the European Commission plans EU-wide legislation by the end of 2026. On funding, Orbem announced a EUR 30 million Series A of debt and equity in October 2023, led by 83North, and a EUR 55.5 million Series B in January 2026, led by Innovation Industries with Supernova Invest, aimed notably at entering the US market, where it opened a Houston office in 2025. In the Series B release the company describes itself as already profitable.
The Story
Founded in 2019 in Munich as a spin-off of TUM's Munich Institute of Biomedical Engineering, by two alumni of the Graduate Center BioEngineering and a colleague from reproductive biotechnology.
How Orbem works
Business Model
B2B: supplies AI-powered MRI imaging systems to poultry hatcheries and fruit and vegetable producers; the commercial terms (sale, lease, service) are not public.
Products & Services
Key Products
- Genus Focus
- Genus Scale
- Genus Echo
Core Use Cases
- Determining embryo sex in eggs (in-ovo sexing)
- Detecting fertilisation status before incubation
- Inspecting fruit for internal defects, such as watermelons
- Checking nuts for deformation, discoloration and dehydration
Market & Clients
Key Customers
Poultry hatcheries in Europe and the United States (11 customers in six countries as of September 2026, as reported by the company) and fruit producers such as JimboFresh, a Spanish watermelon grower.
Geographic Presence
How Orbem competes
Competitive Advantages
- MRI scan of each egg in under a second without piercing the shell
- Modular, automated system with 1 to 6 modules
- Claimed 99.5% accuracy for Genus Focus
How Orbem grows
Growth Strategy
Enter the US market (Houston office since 2025), scale the poultry solutions, move into fruit and vegetables and develop healthcare applications, as stated in the Series B release.
Distribution Model
Direct sales to hatcheries and producers, with Genus Focus developed alongside Vencomatic Group; commercial presence in Europe and the United States and round-the-clock customer support.
Moat (Defensibility)
Combination of industrial MRI hardware and AI models already running in production on hundreds of millions of scanned eggs; the CEO calls it the first and so far only company to demonstrate MRI in under a second.
Regulatory Context
The in-ovo sexing market is driven by chick-culling bans: according to Orbem's newsroom, Germany and France in 2022, Italy from 1 January 2027, and an EU-wide proposal expected by the end of 2026.
Key Risks
- Poultry demand depends on bans and regulatory timing
- Competition from other in-ovo sexing technologies
- New markets (fruit, healthcare) rely on products still at an early stage
Strategic Insights
- Orbem used a regulation-driven market, in-ovo sexing, as a revenue base to fund extending the same technology to fruit and health.
- The Series B release states profitability has already been reached, which is unusual for a deep-tech company with complex hardware.

Key Metrics
Lessons from Orbem
- Starting from an application backed by a regulatory obligation lowers adoption risk for expensive hardware.
- Developing with an industrial partner (Vencomatic Group for Genus Focus) can speed a complex system to market.
