About Helsing

Helsing was founded in 2021 around a clear insight: modern defence has become a software problem. Military platforms generate vast amounts of sensor, radar, imagery and signals data, but operational advantage depends on turning that data into decisions faster than an adversary. Founders Gundbert Scherf, Niklas Kรถhler and Torsten Reil built a software-native company to bring artificial intelligence, updatable architectures and faster development cycles into a sector traditionally defined by long programmes and hardware-centric systems. The first version of Helsing primarily acted as a software layer for governments and industrial partners. Its selection with Saab for the German Eurofighter electronic-warfare upgrade demonstrated that a young startup could earn trust inside highly critical military programmes. Helsing also became involved in the AI infrastructure for the Future Combat Air System and classified land and maritime projects. Its go-to-market is not based on freemium or product-led growth, but on reliability, clearances, co-development, operational demonstrations and public procurement. Russia's invasion of Ukraine accelerated the company's trajectory. Helsing says it has operated in Ukraine since 2022, turning field feedback into a product advantage. HX-2 is the clearest symbol of that shift: an electrically propelled X-wing strike drone with up to 100 kilometres of range, onboard AI and the ability to operate in electronic-warfare environments. Integrated with Altra, Helsing's reconnaissance-strike platform, multiple systems can coordinate in swarm-like configurations while a human operator remains in or on the loop for critical decisions. In February 2025, Helsing announced production of 6,000 additional HX-2 systems for Ukraine following an earlier order for 4,000 HF-1 drones. The next transformation is industrial. Helsing's first Resilience Factory in southern Germany has an initial capacity of more than 1,000 HX-2 systems per month. In July 2026, the company announced a West Virginia facility designed to exceed 2,000 per month once fully operational. Helsing is no longer seeking only to sell software or individual drones: it wants to provide allied governments with distributed and sovereign manufacturing capacity. This expands the opportunity but introduces supply-chain, certification, manufacturing-quality, capital-intensity and operational-liability risks that differ sharply from pure software. Acquisitions reinforce the same vertical-integration strategy. Grob Aircraft adds composite-aircraft design and manufacturing capabilities and supports the development of CA-1 Europa, an autonomous combat aircraft built around the Centaur AI pilot. Blue Ocean adds hardware, manufacturing and operational expertise in autonomous underwater vehicles, strengthening Helsing's SG-1 and LURA maritime programmes for surveillance, anti-submarine warfare and critical-infrastructure protection. Helsing is evolving from a software supplier into an all-domain defence company. Its financing trajectory has been equally rapid: a โ‚ฌ450 million Series C in 2024, a โ‚ฌ600 million Series D in 2025 and a $1.8 billion Series E in July 2026. The latest round valued Helsing at $18 billion and included Dragoneer, Lightspeed, Goldman Sachs Alternatives, JPMorganChase, CPP Investments, General Catalyst, Plural and other global investors. The company says it remains predominantly European-owned, but its international cap table complicates the sovereignty narrative: the decisive questions concern where intellectual property, manufacturing capacity, governance and decision-making power ultimately reside. Valuation is the central stress test. The Financial Times estimated that the $18 billion price represented roughly 32 times projected 2026 revenue of โ‚ฌ441 million, above several cited peers. Helsing is therefore being valued not as a promising startup but as a potential new prime contractor combining AI, autonomous systems, manufacturing and government relationships. Contracts and production show that the company is more than a narrative, yet margins, revenue concentration, future capital needs and long-term economics remain largely undisclosed. The final tension is ethical. Helsing states that humans remain in or on the loop for all critical decisions and frames its mission as protecting democratic societies. Yet HX-2, Altra-coordinated swarms, the Centaur AI pilot and autonomous underwater platforms continue to move the boundary between decision support and operational autonomy. Compressing the time between observation and action is the heart of Helsing's value proposition, but it is also why governance, auditability and meaningful human oversight will be central to its legitimacy.
