About Mollie
Mollie is one of Europe's leading payment service providers, founded in Amsterdam in 2004 with a straightforward mission: make online payment integration simple enough that any business, regardless of size or technical sophistication, can accept money online without requiring a dedicated engineering team to manage the complexity. For its first decade and a half, the company operated steadily and without significant outside capital, building a developer-friendly API and a reputation for reliability and transparency in a market where many alternatives were either expensive, difficult to integrate, or poorly suited to the specific diversity of European payment preferences. The platform's support for more than 25 payment methods is central to its commercial proposition and reflects a genuinely European perspective on how commerce works. Alongside credit cards and PayPal, Mollie integrates local favorites that carry outsized importance in specific markets: iDEAL in the Netherlands, where it accounts for the majority of online payments; Bancontact in Belgium; SOFORT and Klarna in Germany and Austria; and Przelewy24 in Poland, among others. In European e-commerce, offering the payment method a customer trusts and reaches for instinctively can determine whether a checkout completes or a cart is abandoned โ a dynamic that payment platforms designed primarily for the American or UK market consistently underestimate when expanding onto the continent. By 2021, Mollie had grown to serve more than 120,000 merchants across the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, and other European markets, establishing itself as a go-to payment infrastructure provider for European SMEs and a growing number of mid-market and enterprise customers. That year, the company raised $800 million in a Series C round led by Blackstone Growth, pushing its valuation to $6.5 billion and bringing total funding to $940 million โ one of the largest European fintech rounds of the period. The capital was earmarked for international expansion and team growth from 480 to approximately 800 people. Mollie has since pushed further into adjacent financial services, adding working capital financing for merchants, business accounts, and additional tools that deepen the platform's role in customers' financial operations beyond the core payment transaction. For many of its 120,000-plus merchants, Mollie has become not just a payment processor but the financial infrastructure layer underlying their entire online business. In a market where Stripe pursues global developer mindshare and Adyen targets enterprise and platform clients, Mollie's positioning as the European-first, SME-focused payment partner has proven a commercially durable and defensible position โ one built on simplicity, local payment expertise, and a service model that smaller businesses find genuinely accessible and appropriately priced. That differentiation has proven resilient even as competition in European payments has intensified significantly over the past several years.
