About bunq

Ali Niknam founded bunq with a simple and radical idea: build a bank as if banks didn't already exist. Not a digital bank that replicates the traditional experience on an app, but a financial institution rethought from the source code up. Born in Amsterdam, bunq positioned itself as the bank for people who live nomadically or transnationally: digital professionals, expats, freelancers working across multiple countries, people with lifestyles that traditional banks struggle to serve with simplicity. The platform offers current accounts in 30 currencies, multiple IBANs per user, instant payments, physical and virtual cards, advanced budgeting tools, and cashback. But bunq is also something more: it chose to position its products around sustainability themes, allowing users to plant trees with every transaction, and built community tools that distinguish it from competitors. With over 9 million European users and a full banking license issued by the Dutch central bank, bunq is one of the few European neobanks to have reached operational profitability. The model relies on premium subscriptions โ€” the bank doesn't offer a standard free account but requires a monthly fee โ€” a countercultural choice relative to most competitors, but consistent with its positioning as a quality service for a segment willing to pay for more.
