About Isar Aerospace

Isar Aerospace is an aerospace startup founded in 2018 near Munich, Germany, designing and manufacturing launch vehicles for putting satellites into low Earth orbit. The company's flagship rocket, Spectrum, is designed to serve the growing market for commercial and institutional small satellites, a rapidly expanding segment where Europe has historically lagged behind SpaceX and other U.S. and Chinese operators. The path to orbit has been bumpy but instructive: Spectrum's first test flight, on March 30, 2025 from Andรธya Spaceport in Norway, ended with the rocket losing control seconds after liftoff, followed by the vehicle falling into the sea and exploding. Investigations attributed the anomaly to an unexpected opening of a vent valve, which caused a loss of attitude control during the roll manoeuvre. The second qualifying flight, intended to definitively validate the vehicle and carry the first commercial payloads โ€” five scientific and educational cubesats plus an experiment, on a trajectory to sun-synchronous orbit โ€” suffered repeated delays throughout 2026, including a postponement due to an unauthorised vessel entering the launch safety zone and a stoppage due to a detected leak in a composite pressure vessel. Despite flight difficulties, Isar Aerospace continues industrial investment: launch vehicles three through seven are already in production, and a new 40,000-square-metre facility near Munich will open during 2026. The company also signed a contract with Planet Labs Germany for the launch of a high-resolution Earth observation satellite in the Pelican series, expected by the end of 2026 โ€” a sign of commercial confidence despite the technical difficulties encountered during the development phase.
