RobCo

Industrial automation has always been the preserve of large companies: traditional industrial robots cost hundreds of thousands of euros, require specialist integration, occupy dedicated production lines, and do not adapt easily when the product changes. European SME manufacturers — the backbone of continental industry — have largely been excluded from this transformation. RobCo, a Munich startup, aims to reverse this trend with modular, software-defined robots designed for the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises. RobCo's approach is built on two principles: hardware modularity and robot-as-a-service. The robots are designed with interchangeable components that can be reconfigured for different applications without requiring new machines, reducing the cost of adaptation when the production line changes. The software governing them is remotely updatable, allowing functionality improvements over time without costly physical interventions. The business model is robot-as-a-service: companies pay a monthly fee that includes robot use, maintenance, software updates, and technical support. This removes the entry barrier for SMEs that cannot or do not want to invest significant capex: the transition moves from a capital investment to a predictable operating cost aligned with actual hours of use. RobCo's target is precise: mid-sized manufacturing companies with repetitive processes to automate — assembly, visual inspection, material handling — but without the scale or internal expertise to integrate traditional industrial robotics. This segment is numerically very large across Europe and has historically been underserved by the major robotics players. The convergence of falling hardware costs, AI for computer vision, and as-a-service consumption models is finally making possible what was impossible a decade ago: bringing advanced automation to SME manufacturers. RobCo is one of the leading European actors in this space.
