Satellite communications have historically carried a very high barrier to entry: expensive, complex to configure, accessible only to large operators with specialized technical teams and significant budgets. The revolution of low-orbit mega-constellations — from Starlink to Amazon Kuiper to OneWeb — is driving down service costs, but not necessarily the complexity of accessing and integrating satellite connectivity into applications. Skynopy, a French startup based in Toulouse at the heart of the European space industry, set out to solve precisely this access problem. The company has built an API-driven platform that radically simplifies access to satellite communications. The underlying idea is abstraction: just as cloud computing made computational infrastructure accessible to any developer without the need to manage physical servers, Skynopy aims to do the same for satellite connectivity. A development team can integrate satellite communications into its applications through standard APIs, without having to manage the underlying complexity of operators, terminals, and protocols. Target markets are broad: industrial IoT in remote areas, fleet management applications, environmental monitoring, emergency communications, maritime, aviation, oil and gas, and defense. In all of these cases, the need for reliable connectivity in places where terrestrial networks do not reach is structural, and the barrier that Skynopy lowers is genuine. Toulouse is Europe's aerospace capital — home to Airbus, Thales Alenia Space, CNES, and a dense ecosystem of space sector suppliers and startups. Operating in this environment gives Skynopy privileged access to technical expertise, industrial partnerships, and potential clients. The business model follows a platform-as-a-service approach, with revenue tied to platform usage by developers and companies. This is a positioning that mirrors that of major cloud providers: invisible infrastructure, value generated within the ecosystem of those who build on top of it.
