The energy transition has a bottleneck that cannot be solved by installing more solar panels or wind turbines: batteries. The lithium-ion cells powering most electric vehicles and stationary storage systems today are approaching the physical limits of their energy density. New materials, new chemistries, and new cell architectures are needed. Holyvolt, based in Stockholm, works on this problem with an approach that combines materials science and advanced manufacturing. The company develops lithium-metal batteries for the next generation of electric vehicles โ a technology that promises significantly higher energy densities than conventional lithium-ion batteries. Using lithium metal as the anode eliminates the need for graphite, reducing battery weight and increasing the amount of energy that can be stored in a given volume. The expected result is vehicles with longer range, reduced charging times, and lighter packs. Holyvolt's technological differentiation lies in combining screen printing โ a precise deposition technique โ with high-throughput materials discovery, which accelerates the process of identifying and validating new chemical compositions. This approach reduces the time required to move from fundamental research to industrial-scale prototyping. The business model is B2B deep tech: Holyvolt licenses its manufacturing technology to storage device manufacturers and sells components or production lines. Revenue comes from technology licensing, royalties, equipment sales, and research collaborations with companies in the energy and automotive sectors. The advanced battery market is one of the most competitive investment fields in the world, with Chinese, American, and Asian players dominating production at scale. The challenge for Holyvolt is not only technological but also industrial: bringing a new chemistry from proof of concept to mass production requires enormous capital and strategic partnerships with vehicle manufacturers.
The Story
Holyvolt was founded in Sweden in 2022 by Mathias Ingvarsson, with Hans Victor among the co-founders, to transform over twenty years of research on nanopastes and printing technology into a product. The problem it addresses is profound: batteries and energy storage still face bottlenecks in costs, materials, manufacturing, and performance that slow down the energy transition more than necessary. The insight is that a radically different platform for materials and production can change not just a component, but the economy of the entire energy system. The aha moment did not come from a single night in a garage, but from realizing that a long trajectory of research was finally ready for commercialization. Holyvolt thus starts as an industrial deep-tech company with lab DNA and the ambition to reinvent the sector, not just to marginally improve it.
