About AMSilk

AMSilk GmbH is based in Neuried, in the Munich area. Established in 2008, it grew out of silk-protein research at the Technical University of Munich. Historical sources identify Thomas Scheibel, Lin Römer and Axel Leimer as its founding team; TUM contributed a patent portfolio to the new company. AMSilk develops protein materials using fermentation, with applications in yarns and industrial formulations. Commercial arrangements can involve materials supply, licensing and joint development. Its CEO announcement cites the use of its yarns in Balenciaga's Spring 2026 collection. In July 2026, AMSilk expanded its agreement with Ajinomoto Foods Europe for a dedicated production line in Nesle, France. The agreement describes planned capacity and industrial investment rather than revenue already earned. Verified financing includes €5 million in 2011, a €29 million Series C in 2021, an additional €25 million in 2023 and a €52 million package of equity and convertibles in 2025. Seed funding and the 2016 round remain unquantified. The cosmetics-business sale to Givaudan announced in 2019 concerned a business division rather than the whole company. Christian Wichert has been CEO since June 2026.
