About Seqera
Nextflow was created in 2013 at the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Barcelona as an open-source framework for writing and running reproducible data-analysis pipelines that move across different infrastructures. Its author is Paolo Di Tommaso; Evan Floden, who joined its development during his PhD at the CRG, is the co-founder who now runs the company as CEO. In 2018 the two founded Seqera (then Seqera Labs) as a CRG spin-off, aiming to build a commercial offering around Nextflow for research and development teams handling large volumes of biological data. Seqera now describes itself as the driving force behind Nextflow, MultiQC and the Seqera Platform, its "intelligent engine for life sciences". The platform brings pipeline orchestration, data, interactive analysis (Studios), optimised cloud and on-premises compute, standardised containers (Wave) and an AI assistant called Co-Scientist into one environment. It is sold as Cloud Basic, Cloud Pro, Enterprise and GxP-Ready deployments, while the engine stays open source: Nextflow, MultiQC and Wave are open projects maintained by the company. In 2024 Seqera acquired tinybio, a New York generative-AI bioinformatics startup, to let users run pipelines and analyses in natural language. The commercial track record is visible in its funding milestones. In September 2021 it raised a $5.5M seed co-led by Talis Capital and Speedinvest. By March 2022 it reported 50 commercial clients, 8 of them among the top 20 pharmaceutical companies, and ARR growth above 800% in 2021. In October 2022 it closed a โฌ22M Series A led by Addition, citing roughly 400% year-on-year revenue growth, headcount that had tripled in twelve months, and customers including AstraZeneca, Janssen, Oxford Nanopore and Invitae. In May 2025 it announced a $26M Series B, again led by Addition, with Speedinvest, Talis, Amino Collective, BoxOne and SNR. According to its own About page, Seqera today has more than 100 employees, over 150 enterprise customers, an estimated 25,000 Nextflow users, more than 160,000 monthly downloads and over 1,900 open-source contributors. Published customer stories include Genomics England, the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene, Color Health and BioSkryb Genomics. The company lists its registered address and European office in Barcelona, with further offices in New York and London. No official revenue or valuation figures were found. Why it matters: Seqera is a rare case of an open-source standard born in European public research and turned into a software infrastructure company for pharma and genomics, a field where reproducibility, compliance and compute cost bear directly on how fast drugs are discovered. The next test is whether it can carry the same model into the era of AI scientific agents.
The Story
Founded in 2018 as a spin-off of Barcelona's Centre for Genomic Regulation by Paolo Di Tommaso, who created Nextflow in 2013, and Evan Floden.
How Seqera works
Business Model
B2B: a commercial platform (Seqera Platform, offered as Cloud Basic, Cloud Pro, Enterprise and GxP-Ready) built on open-source software (Nextflow, MultiQC, Wave).
Revenue Model
Not verified in detail: sources point to a tiered platform offering for enterprise customers plus professional services; the company does not publish revenue.

Geographic Presence
How Seqera competes
Competitors
Competitive Advantages
- Creators of Nextflow, an open-source standard with an estimated 25,000 users and 160,000+ monthly downloads
- nf-core ecosystem: 100+ curated pipelines and 1,900+ contributors
- Integrated platform covering pipelines, data, interactive analysis, compute and AI
- GxP-Ready deployment option and data that stays under the user's control
How Seqera grows
Growth Strategy
Extend the platform beyond orchestration to the full scientific data-analysis lifecycle, with AI-native tooling (Co-Scientist, tinybio) and compliant offerings for regulated customers, using the 2025 Series B.
Distribution Model
Bottom-up adoption through the open-source community, then direct B2B sales of cloud and enterprise platform tiers; events such as the Nextflow Summit sustain the community.
Moat (Defensibility)
Stewardship of the open-source Nextflow project and its community, scientific citations (7,500+ across Nextflow, nf-core and MultiQC) and pharma relationships built on the platform.
Regulatory Context
Works with genomic and clinical data in pharma settings: the GxP-Ready offering and data-residency control address the sector's compliance requirements.
Key Risks
- Dependence on pharma and biotech R&D budgets, a cyclical sector
- Converting open-source adoption into revenue without alienating the community
- Competition from rival bioinformatics platforms and cloud providers
- Execution risk in integrating AI and agents into regulated workflows
Strategic Insights
- The open-source community (1,900+ contributors, 100+ curated nf-core pipelines) works both as an acquisition channel and as a barrier to entry for the commercial offering.
- With the 2024 tinybio acquisition and Co-Scientist, the product is moving toward AI-assisted and agentic analysis.
- Both the Series A (2022) and the Series B (2025) were led by Addition, a sign of an anchor investor that has stayed with the company for three years.
- The GxP-Ready tier signals an intent to serve regulated pharma workflows, not only research.

Key Metrics
Lessons from Seqera
- An open-source project with real adoption can prepare the commercial ground: Seqera started from Nextflow, created five years before the company.
- Selling to pharma and genomics depends on reproducibility, data control and compliance, not on compute speed alone.
- Keeping the engine open while monetising the platform, governance and support lets a company grow with its community without giving away the commercial product.
