About Kilobaser GmbH

In molecular biology, time is a critical variable. Every time a laboratory needs oligonucleotides โ€” short synthetic DNA or RNA sequences essential for a vast range of experiments โ€” it must place an external order, wait for production, manage shipping logistics, and hope the quality meets expectations. Kilobaser reverses this dynamic by bringing synthesis directly into the laboratory. The DNA and RNA synthesizer developed by the company enables researchers to produce ready-to-use modified oligonucleotides on demand, eliminating wait times and reducing dependence on external suppliers. In-house oligo production is not simply a question of speed โ€” it is also a question of experimental flexibility. Being able to synthesize a custom sequence within hours rather than days or weeks fundamentally changes how a research team plans experiments, responds to results, and iterates on protocols. Kilobaser's model centres on an integrated hardware-software platform, with the physical synthesizer as the core product and reagents and software as recurring components. The target customers are research laboratories, universities, pharmaceutical companies, and biotech firms that work daily with molecular tools and find the timelines and dependencies of external synthesis a constraint on their operational efficiency. In a biological research ecosystem increasingly oriented toward speed and customisation, Kilobaser responds with a solution that places control of molecular production directly in the hands of researchers.

The Story

Our mission is to provide laboratory professionals with DNA and RNA synthesizers at the push of a button, ensuring independence and flexibility through immediate access to custom oligonucleotides. In 2013, we co-founded Open Biolab Graz, Austria (OLGA), a community laboratory for molecular biology and biohacking, where the idea for Kilobaser emerged from the founders' frequent need for DNA primers. Thus, we established OLGA, a community lab for students and the general public.
