Linz, 2022. Austria is not the first country that comes to mind when thinking about frontier AI, but it is here that Emmi AI was born โ a startup focused on a very specific and very difficult problem: teaching AI systems to accurately simulate the physical behaviour of materials and fluids in industrial manufacturing. Emmi AI develops specialised models for airflow simulation, heat transfer analysis and mechanical material stress โ processes central to industrial design, aeronautical engineering, automotive and advanced manufacturing. Traditional physical simulation methods such as Finite Element Analysis are accurate but slow: they require expensive hardware and computation times measured in hours or days. Emmi AI's approach is to build AI surrogate models that approximate these calculations in real time, making physical simulation accessible during the design process rather than only in the validation phase. The startup had raised โฌ15 million in 2025 โ Austria's largest round of the year โ signalling that the industrial AI market was already ready to bet on physical simulation applications. The acquisition by Mistral AI in May 2026, at an undisclosed price, represents the highest validation: Europe's leading AI company chose Emmi AI to build its industrial AI and physical simulation capabilities.
The Story
Emmi AI was founded in 2022 in Linz to apply AI models to industrial physics simulation โ a domain where traditional FEA and CFD software is powerful but inaccessible due to speed and cost constraints. The goal was to make flow, heat and material stress simulation available in real time during the industrial design process.
