DFINITY carries out research and development for the Internet Computer, a network that runs applications and smart contracts on decentralised infrastructure, with work on cryptography and distributed systems and tools for developers. Caffeine, opened in beta on 15 October 2025, lets people build applications through natural language. The foundation (DFINITY Stiftung) was established in Zug in October 2016 by Dominic Williams, later moved to Zurich and reports more than 180 people. The documented funding is token-related: about $4.2 million in 2017, $61 million in February 2018 from Polychain and Andreessen Horowitz and $102 million in August 2018 (Forbes). The $1.9 billion figure reported by the press in 2018 concerns tokens and does not prove an equity valuation.
