Drug development is expensive in ways that are both obvious and hidden. The obvious costs โ€” clinical trials, regulatory submissions, manufacturing scale-up โ€” get most of the attention. But there is a less-discussed failure mode that costs the pharmaceutical industry billions every year: immunogenicity, the tendency of the patient's immune system to recognize a therapeutic antibody as foreign and mount a response against it. When this happens, the drug becomes ineffective or dangerous, and years of development work collapse. The worst part is that immunogenicity risk is usually discovered late โ€” after enormous investment has already been made. ALP Bio, a Swiss biotech founded in 2025 and based in Schlieren near Zurich, is building tools to identify this risk much earlier. The company combines human immune organoids โ€” three-dimensional models of the immune system constructed from human tissue โ€” with generative AI to predict how the immune system will respond to a candidate antibody. Instead of waiting for clinical signals, ALP Bio's platform surfaces the risk in the early stages of development, when course corrections are still cheap and the consequences of a wrong turn have not yet compounded. The technological components here work together in a way that makes the approach more powerful than either would be alone. Human immune organoids provide a biologically accurate testing environment that reflects actual human immune responses far better than animal models or simplified cell assays. Generative AI adds the ability to analyze complex patterns across large datasets and generate predictions that would be beyond the reach of manual analysis. Together, they create a system that can flag immunogenicity risk with a level of accuracy and timeliness that existing methods cannot match. With โ‚ฌ1.9 million in pre-seed funding led by 42CAP and supported by Venture Kick, ALP Bio is working toward validation with its first pharmaceutical partners. The commercial logic is clear: for any drug company developing biologics, a tool that reliably predicts immunogenicity early is not a nice-to-have but a direct lever on development costs and success rates. ALP Bio is building that tool, and doing it with a platform that has the potential to extend well beyond antibodies to other classes of biologics as the science and the company mature.
