Agreena

Agreena is a Copenhagen-based startup founded in 2019 with an ambitious mission: to pay European farmers for the carbon they sequester in soil through regenerative agriculture practices. For decades, farmers who adopted sustainable methods bore the economic costs without any compensation. Agreena reverses this logic by creating a voluntary agricultural carbon credit market, where companies purchase VCUs (Verified Carbon Units) generated from farmland managed to specific soil regeneration standards. The company runs the AgreenaCarbon programme, spanning 1.6 million hectares across the UK, Denmark, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, and Spain. In 2024, it became the first large-scale arable farming project verified under Verra's VCS VM0042 methodology — a critical certification ensuring the quality and transparency of the credits it sells, with 2.3 million verified carbon units issued. In 2023, Agreena closed a €46 million Series B led by HV Capital, with participation from AENU, Anthemis, Kinnevik, and Denmark's Export and Investment Fund. The IFC (International Finance Corporation) also signed a partnership to expand sustainable finance access for farmers enrolled in the programme.
