9fin: Decoding the $145 Trillion Debt Market
Listen to the episodeAbout 9fin
9fin was founded in London in 2016 by Steven Hunter and Hussam El-Sheikh out of direct frustration experienced inside major banks: billion-dollar decisions in debt markets were still being made by reading PDFs, opening fragmented data rooms and cross-referencing information spread across emails and spreadsheets. The problem was not a lack of data โ it was that data was slow, opaque and unreliable. 9fin's answer is an AI-native platform that integrates proprietary data, real-time news, analytics, document extraction and intelligent workflows in a single environment. The technology automatically reads and structures complex documents โ covenants, credit agreements, pricing sheets โ making them searchable and comparable in seconds instead of hours. The model is hybrid: AI and expert analysts, credit journalists and legal specialists work together to ensure reliability, because in debt markets a mistake is not a bug but a wrong financial decision. The growth strategy is vertical: 9fin starts with European leveraged finance, then expands to high-yield bonds, distressed debt, private credit, CLOs, asset-based finance and investment grade, with coverage across North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia-Pacific. In 2025 it acquires Bond Radar, adding 20 years of historical data on primary debt markets. In 2026, the $170M Series C led by HarbourVest brings the valuation to $1.3 billion, with over 300 institutional clients and 350 people in the team.
The Story
Steven Hunter, formerly of J.P. Morgan and Babson Capital in leveraged finance, and Hussam El-Sheikh experienced firsthand the frustration of making billion-dollar decisions with PDFs, faxes and Excel. In 2016 they founded 9fin with the idea of bringing AI to debt markets, applying to the Google AI Residency with the pitch 'AI-powered financial data'.
