Back Market

📍 Francia → Full startup profile

Back Market was founded in 2014 in Paris from an observation by Thibaud Hug de Larauze, Vianney Vaute and Quentin Couturier: the refurbished market was fragmented, unreliable and lacked a reference brand. But before building a platform, the team wanted to validate a simpler hypothesis: would people buy refurbished electronics if the process were simple and guaranteed?

The MVP was almost embarrassing in its simplicity. The team manually contacted about ten existing refurbishing companies in France, negotiated access to their product catalogue, and created a static web page with a list of available products. No shopping cart, no automatic payment system: interested users filled out a form, the team processed orders manually via email and collected payment with PayPal.

In 15 days, they had the first data point: people were buying. And not just that: they asked about warranties, asked questions about the seller, were willing to pay more for a more reliable experience. This information was pure gold — it defined exactly what the real platform coming later would need to offer.

The MVP was not a product — it was an experiment. The question it answered was not "does the product work?" but "does the demand exist?"

💡 Key Insight

An MVP is not the small version of the final product — it is the simplest possible version that can answer the most important question you have. The answer justifies everything else.
