Trade Republic

📍 Germania → Full startup profile

Trade Republic was founded in 2019 with a precise market thesis: a generation of Europeans existed with significant savings, high digital literacy, but no investment tool built for them. Robinhood had proven the model in the US. The European market was fragmented between expensive traditional brokers and banks with opaque products.

The team's Lean Canvas identified the problem with great granularity: not "trading is complicated" (too generic) but "a young German or Italian with €500 to invest has no way to do it at reasonable cost without opening an account with a professional broker".

The solution was clear: a mobile-first app, a flat €1 fee per transaction, access to European and US ETFs and stocks. But the most critical point of the Lean Canvas was the channel: Trade Republic chose not to do traditional marketing — it relied on word of mouth among retail investors and online financial communities (Reddit, personal finance forums).

The unfair advantage was a German banking licence obtained directly — not through an external provider — which allowed full control of infrastructure costs and faster order execution than competitors.

The result: from 0 to 4 million customers in under 4 years, with a cost structure radically leaner than traditional brokers.

💡 Key Insight

The Lean Canvas helped Trade Republic compete not in the entire brokerage market, but in a specific sub-segment with a precise problem and a channel that incumbents ignored.
