Back Market

📍 Francia → Full startup profile

Back Market was founded in 2014 in Paris with an apparent problem: how to sell refurbished electronics online. The team conducted customer discovery with two groups: those who had already bought refurbished products and those who never had.

The most important pattern emerged from the second group. People who had never bought refurbished were not blocked by price (that was already attractive) — they were blocked by fear: "What if the product breaks after a month?", "I don't know where it comes from, who used it before?", "There's no guarantee like new products have?".

Customer discovery revealed that the problem to solve was not logistical (how to source products) but psychological (how to eliminate perceived risk). Back Market responded with three moves: a 30-day money-back guarantee, certification of refurbishers through periodic audits, and a deliberate choice of language that avoided the words "used" or "second-hand" — only "refurbished" or "like new".

This redefined the entire positioning: Back Market was not selling used products. It was selling verified products with warranties, that cost less than new. A semantic difference worth billions.

💡 Key Insight

In customer discovery, non-customers are often more informative than customers: their objections define the barriers the product must eliminate before price even becomes relevant.
