About Zepz (WorldRemit)

Ismail Ahmed understands the problem of international money transfers from the inside. Born in Somalia and raised in Uganda, Ahmed experienced firsthand the difficulty of sending money to family through traditional channels: physical agents with limited hours, high fees, slow delivery times, and โ€” for recipients in countries with low banking penetration โ€” the challenge of collecting funds safely. That direct experience became the founding insight behind WorldRemit, now part of the Zepz group. Zepz, headquartered in London, operates the WorldRemit and Sendwave brands to provide fully digital international money transfer services. The model takes on an industry historically dominated by Western Union and MoneyGram, built on networks of physical agents with high cost structures that translate directly into high fees for senders. By eliminating the physical agent and moving the entire flow onto a mobile app, Zepz can offer substantially lower fees while maintaining viable margins. The platform serves five million active customers with transfers to more than 130 countries. The primary corridors include flows between Europe and sub-Saharan Africa, between the UK and South Asia, and between the United States and Latin America โ€” markets where large diaspora communities have a steady and significant need for reliable, affordable remittances. Sendwave, acquired in 2020, specializes in transfers to Africa with a particular emphasis on speed and ease of use for first-time smartphone users. The global remittance market moves hundreds of billions of dollars annually and represents one of the most important sources of capital inflows to developing economies โ€” in many cases exceeding international aid flows. Reducing the cost of these transactions has a direct and measurable impact on the disposable income of receiving families. That concrete social dimension has been central to Ahmed's vision and sets Zepz apart from a purely commercial fintech play.
