About Zalando
Zalando is the European fashion e-commerce platform founded in Berlin in 2008 by Robert and Marc Samwer, David Schneider, Rubin Ritter, and Thoma Heilmann, which in little more than a decade became the defining reference point for online fashion across Europe. It started as a clone of Zappos โ the Samwer brothers' well-established playbook of replicating proven American internet models in European markets โ but Zalando went on to develop its own strategy and identity, evolving from a pure retailer into a full-scale fashion platform. Zalando's growth trajectory is a textbook case of disciplined geographic scaling. The company first established dominance in its home market of Germany before expanding gradually into culturally adjacent markets โ Austria, Switzerland, the Benelux โ and then progressively across all of Europe. This measured approach, financed by the Samwers and early backers including Kinnevik and Holtzbrinck, allowed Zalando to reach the scale required to list on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in 2014, in what became one of the most significant tech IPOs in German stock market history. Today, Zalando operates as a multi-layered platform rather than a simple retailer. The Zalando Partner Program enables brands to sell directly on the platform as a pure marketplace, while the ZFS (Zalando Fulfillment Solutions) logistics service allows brands to route their orders through Zalando's supply chain infrastructure. This stack of platform services has turned Zalando from a retailer into the underlying infrastructure on which European fashion brands build their online businesses. With โฌ10.1 billion in revenue in 2023 and more than 50 million active customers, Zalando has reached a scale that makes it not just a successful company but a structural piece of European e-commerce โ the kind of platform that competitors, brands, and regulators all have to reckon with.
The Story
Zalando was founded in Berlin in 2008 with the vision of becoming Europe's leading online fashion destination. The founders recognized that while Amazon dominated general merchandise, fashion remained largely physical and fragmented. Zalando built an inventory-light model, partnering with brands and retailers to offer unmatched selection. By investing in logistics and customer experience, Zalando became synonymous with convenient fashion shopping across Europe.
