WeTransfer is the Dutch platform founded in 2009 in Amsterdam that transformed sending large files into a simple, elegant, and free experience — at a time when email and FTP were the only alternatives available. The service allows sending files up to 2 GB for free via a temporary link, or larger files with a premium subscription, with an interface characterised by high-quality artistic backgrounds that made the brand iconic in the creative world. WeTransfer positioned itself from the outset as a platform for creatives: designers, photographers, musicians, agencies — people who work with heavy files and need to deliver them quickly. The creative community fuelled powerful organic growth: hundreds of millions of users worldwide, with strong penetration among visual communication professionals. The startup raised approximately $73 million in funding and expanded its offering beyond file transfer: the Collect suite allows gathering client feedback on creative work, Paste is a collaborative presentation tool, and Portfolio allows creatives to showcase their work. The planned 2021 IPO was withdrawn due to adverse market conditions. WeTransfer remains one of the most recognisable brands in the global creative toolstack, with a freemium model that converts a minority of free users into premium subscribers.
