EP7 - Unicorn Files - Wallapop: The Flea Market That Revolutionized Used Goods
Listen to the episodeAbout Wallapop
Wallapop is a Barcelona-based startup launched in 2013 that operates a mobile and web marketplace for peer-to-peer trading of secondhand goods. Its app uses geolocation to surface nearby listings, creating a hyper-local buying and selling experience that promotes sustainable consumption and gives a second life to items accumulating in closets and garages across Spain and beyond. The design philosophy was mobile-first from day one: rather than replicating the sparse classified ad format of Craigslist or the auction mechanics of eBay, Wallapop built an experience that felt closer to a social feed than a traditional marketplace, swipeable and visual, optimized for the scrolling habits of smartphone users. That intuition proved commercially prescient. The platform grew rapidly within Spain, becoming a cultural fixture for everything from children's clothing to vintage electronics to hand-me-down furniture, embedded in everyday consumer behavior in a way that few marketplaces in any country achieve. For a generation increasingly attentive to both personal finances and environmental impact, the ability to buy and sell locally without intermediaries resonated deeply. The COVID-19 pandemic tested the local-transaction model by making in-person exchanges uncomfortable or impossible for extended periods. Wallapop responded by launching Envíos, a nationwide pickup and home delivery service that transformed the platform from a neighborhood swap meet into a national marketplace almost overnight. Buyers could suddenly access items from anywhere in the country; sellers gained a vastly larger pool of potential buyers for anything they listed. After the pandemic lifted, Envíos remained a cornerstone of the user experience, permanently expanding how Spanish consumers think about secondhand shopping. Today Wallapop counts more than 15 million users and over 180 million items listed, figures that establish it as one of the largest secondhand markets in Spain by any metric. The platform has also deepened its seller tools over the years, adding integrated payment processing, shipping labels, buyer protection guarantees, and category-specific features for categories like real estate, car listings, and professional services that extend well beyond the original consumer goods focus. The sustainability narrative that runs through Wallapop's brand has grown only more powerful as climate awareness has moved from niche concern to mainstream consumer identity. The company has leaned into this positioning, using environmental impact data — tonnes of CO2 avoided, items kept out of landfill — as part of its commercial story to both users and potential partners. In 2025, South Korean internet giant Naver acquired Wallapop at a valuation of approximately €600 million, a transaction that validated more than a decade of platform building and market leadership. The acquisition positioned Wallapop's model as a potential template for secondhand marketplace expansion into other geographies where peer-to-peer commerce has yet to find its dominant digital player — a validation of the commercial and strategic relevance of what Wallapop built in Spain, and a signal that the recommerce opportunity in Europe remains significant.
