Listen to the episodeAbout UNGUESS
UNGUESS was created in Italy to bring real users into the design, development and validation process of digital products. The company started with crowdtesting for apps and websites, then expanded into user experience, software quality, cybersecurity, accessibility, market research and, more recently, AI training and testing for AI agents and features. After a growth round of more than โฌ10 million led by Fondo Italiano d'Investimento, the company accelerated its European expansion through the acquisition of Ferpection in France in 2024 and Testbirds in 2026, creating a group with a direct presence in Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK.
The Story
The company was founded in 2015 as AppQuality within the Politecnico di Milano ecosystem, with the idea of applying crowdtesting to the quality of apps and digital products. The founders cited by available sources are Edoardo Vannutelli, Filippo Maria Renga and Luca Manara. In 2022 AppQuality rebranded as UNGUESS to reflect a broader scope: not just app testing, but reducing guesswork in product decision-making.

How UNGUESS competes
Competitors
Competitive Advantages
- Community-based access to real users and specialist testers
- Combination of platform, methodology and managed services
- European footprint strengthened through Ferpection and Testbirds
- Enterprise customer base and references across regulated and consumer-facing sectors
- Positioning across UX, QA, accessibility, cybersecurity and AI testing rather than a single testing niche
How UNGUESS grows
Growth Strategy
European expansion through targeted acquisitions, consolidation of the TRYBER and The Nest communities, development of AI Training and AI testing services, strengthening of cybersecurity and accessibility, and sales to large global enterprise clients.
Distribution Model
Direct B2B sales to enterprise product, UX, marketing, QA, security, digital transformation and AI teams, supported by managed campaigns and platform access.
Moat (Defensibility)
The main moat is the combination of a profiled community, proprietary platform, methodological know-how, enterprise customers and European geographic presence. The Testbirds acquisition strengthens the moat across community scale, device coverage, DACH/Benelux reach and real-world testing for digital and AI products.
Regulatory Context
The context includes GDPR and data protection for data relating to testers, clients and users involved in campaigns; cybersecurity standards and requirements for security testing and bug bounty activities; and digital accessibility, including the growing relevance of the European Accessibility Act for digital products and services in Europe.
Key Risks
- Operational and cultural integration of the Ferpection and Testbirds acquisitions
- Competitive pressure from global UX research and software testing platforms
- Commoditisation risk if AI automates parts of standardised testing
- Data protection, security and consent-management complexity in real-user testing
- Need to maintain community quality, engagement and profiling at international scale
Strategic Insights
- Crowdtesting can become a defensible B2B category when it combines community, methodology, platform and enterprise customer access.
- The acquisitions of Ferpection and Testbirds point to a European consolidation strategy in a fragmented market spanning UX research, QA, accessibility and cybersecurity testing.
- Combining AI and human insights can be a strong positioning: AI accelerates analysis and workflows, while human feedback remains the benchmark for experience, trust and security use cases.
- The move from Italian player to European group shows a possible path for Italian B2B scaleups: local growth capital, targeted acquisitions and focus on an international vertical category.

Key Metrics
Lessons from UNGUESS
- Starting from a narrow, painful use case โ app quality โ can lead to a broader platform when the underlying problem is recurring.
- Rebranding works when it reflects a genuine category expansion, not just a visual refresh.
- To sell to large enterprise customers, methodology, operational reliability and compliance matter as much as the software product.
- In fragmented European markets, selective M&A can be more effective than pure country-by-country commercial expansion.
