EP24 - UiPath: From RPA to AI Agents That Orchestrate the Enterprise

About UiPath

Not every great technology company was born in Silicon Valley. Some took shape in Bucharest apartments, built by founders who spent years working on obscure software components before discovering they were sitting next to one of the biggest opportunities in enterprise software. UiPath is exactly that story. Founded in 2005 by Daniel Dines and Marius Tรฎrcฤƒ under the name DeskOver, the Romanian company spent nearly a decade building software libraries for third parties before spotting the real opening. In 2015, a decisive pivot toward robotic process automation โ€” RPA โ€” changed everything. The concept was powerful in its straightforwardness: software robots that mimic human actions on digital interfaces, handling repetitive, rule-based tasks like data entry, document extraction, and invoice processing with a speed and consistency no human operator could match. In a corporate world hungry for operational efficiency without the disruption of replacing legacy systems, UiPath arrived with exactly the right answer at exactly the right moment. The growth that followed was remarkable. UiPath became a unicorn in 2018 at a $3 billion valuation and went public on the NYSE in 2021 at a valuation of roughly $35 billion โ€” one of the most significant IPOs in European technology history. Though headquartered in New York, the company remains a defining symbol of Eastern Europe's capacity to produce genuinely global technology leaders. For fiscal year 2026, ending January 31, 2026, UiPath reported revenue of $1.61 billion, up 13% year-over-year, and Annual Recurring Revenue of $1.853 billion, growing 11%. Most notably, the company achieved full-year GAAP profitability for the first time in its history โ€” a milestone that marks the transition from a high-growth startup into a structurally profitable software business. UiPath serves more than 10,000 enterprise customers worldwide, including approximately 25% of the Fortune 500, spanning financial services, healthcare, insurance, manufacturing, and government. But the most compelling part of UiPath's story in 2025โ€“2026 isn't its past performance โ€” it's the strategic direction Dines is charting. The company has repositioned itself from an RPA provider into an agentic automation platform. The centerpiece of that shift is UiPath Maestro, an orchestration layer that allows enterprises to manage, govern, and coordinate fleets of AI agents โ€” whether built by UiPath, Microsoft, OpenAI, or any other vendor โ€” alongside traditional software robots and human workers. In February 2026, UiPath acquired WorkFusion, adding prebuilt agentic capabilities for AML and KYC workflows in financial services. Dines describes the company's strategic posture as the 'Switzerland of AI': model-agnostic, partnering with OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, building a platform that amplifies any agent rather than competing with one. At a moment when many fear that generative AI will make RPA obsolete, UiPath is constructing the opposite argument: AI needs a reliable execution infrastructure. And for two decades, that infrastructure has been called UiPath.
