About Stirtec GmbH
Friction stir welding is a solid-state joining technique that does not bring the material to melting point: rather than dissolving and resolidifying the metal as in conventional welding, it uses the friction and pressure of a rotating tool to create a superior metallurgical bond, without the cracks, distortions, and heat-affected zones typical of arc-based processes. For sectors such as aerospace, automotive, rail, and defence, this technology is not a marginal alternative โ it is often the engineering choice of preference for components where quality, structural integrity, and process repeatability are non-negotiable. Stirtec is the specialised technical partner that accompanies companies through the entire adoption cycle of this technology: from process design to qualification against industry standards, from prototyping to production, through operator training and post-sales support. This end-to-end coverage is Stirtec's defining characteristic: rather than simply selling machines or licences, the company commits to transferring the expertise needed for clients to integrate FSW into their production processes effectively and in a certified manner. The target customers are manufacturing companies in high-engineering sectors looking to adopt friction stir welding to improve joint quality, reduce defects, and optimise production processes. The B2B model is built around tailored solutions and services. In a market where specialised technical expertise is scarce and the cost of errors during development is high, Stirtec positions itself as a reliable partner for those seeking to innovate in joining processes.
The Story
From this passion for friction welding, in 2010 the company Stirtec was founded as a spin-off from the Graz University of Technology, with numerous patents in the development of suitable equipment, typical applications for processing, and the design of corresponding mechanical tools. - Clean and environmentally friendly: like conventional FSSW, the process operates without filler materials, fumes, or emissions, ensuring a clean production environment.
