SPOKE SAFETY, a startup based in Bergamo, has developed VRU2X (Vulnerable Road User to Everything), a technology that allows bicycles and motor vehicles to communicate in real time, creating mutual awareness before an accident occurs. The mechanism is V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication, already adopted in automotive contexts to connect vehicles and road infrastructure, now extended by SPOKE to vulnerable road users — cyclists, scooter riders, and pedestrians with connected devices. A car approaching an intersection can receive a signal from a bicycle arriving from the blind side; a cyclist approaching a stationary vehicle blocking the lane can be warned in advance. The market is broad and articulates across multiple levels: bicycle and vehicle manufacturers, micromobility operators, municipalities, fleet managers, and automotive partners. The B2B custom solutions model allows SPOKE to adapt to the different needs of each segment. In a context where European cities are investing heavily in sustainable mobility infrastructure — cycle lanes, 30 km/h zones, bike-sharing programmes — cyclist safety is becoming a political priority as well as a technical one.
