About SimScale

Engineering simulation โ€” computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis, thermal analysis โ€” has been a fundamental tool in physical product development for decades. But access to these tools has historically been limited by two barriers: software license costs, often in the tens of thousands of euros per year, and the need for high-performance workstations to run the calculations. SimScale has chosen to eliminate both barriers by bringing CAE simulation entirely to the cloud. The platform allows engineers, R&D teams, and companies to run CFD, FEA, and thermal simulations directly in the browser, with no software to install, no dedicated hardware, and the scalable computing power of cloud infrastructure. The result is democratized access to professional simulation: a mid-sized design studio, a university team, or a startup can now access the same tools that were once the exclusive domain of large corporations with dedicated budgets. The target sectors are broad: AEC (architecture, engineering, and construction), manufacturing, HVAC, automotive, and product design. In each of these domains, the ability to simulate the physical behavior of a product or system before building it has direct economic value in terms of reducing design errors and accelerating the development cycle. The B2B model with customized solutions coexists with a more democratic offering: SimScale also has a significant community and a free plan for students and researchers, building an ecosystem around the platform.

Strategic Insights

  • Cloud-based simulation removes the infrastructure barrier that kept smaller companies out of the simulation market โ€” the addressable audience is orders of magnitude larger than legacy vendors target.
  • The shift to cloud-native simulation follows a broader SaaS playbook: pay-as-you-go, collaboration features, and API integrations suit the way modern engineering teams work.
  • Simulation is deeply embedded in product development workflows โ€” once integrated, SimScale becomes a daily tool with high retention and expansion potential.

Lessons from SimScale

  • Democratising expert tooling requires both technical credibility (simulation accuracy must match or exceed desktop tools) and strong UX investment to lower the learning curve.
  • A freemium or academic programme can build the user base and create future enterprise champions โ€” engineers become decision-makers over their careers.
  • For simulation software, customer success is the growth engine: helping customers achieve faster results generates case studies that sell better than any marketing content.
