About Rivan

Not every decarbonization problem can be solved with a battery and an electric motor. Entire sectors โ€” maritime shipping, aviation, steel, cement, heavy chemicals โ€” face technical or economic barriers to direct electrification that cannot realistically be overcome in the near term. For these industries, low-emission synthetic fuels are one of the few concrete alternatives available today. Rivan, a London-based British startup, has chosen to operate squarely in this space. The company develops synthetic fuels designed for Europe's heavy industry: energy-intensive sectors that need to decarbonize without being able to dismantle their existing technological infrastructure. Rivan's synthetic fuels are engineered for compatibility with engines and plants already in operation, lowering the barrier to adoption and making the energy transition economically viable for customers that cannot afford complete technological overhauls. The addressable market is enormous and structurally resistant to purely electric solutions. Commercial shipping alone emits approximately one billion tonnes of CO2 per year. Aviation contributes significantly to global emissions. Heavy chemical and metallurgical industries account for substantial portions of Europe's carbon footprint. All of these sectors are actively searching for workable solutions, driven by increasingly stringent regulations including the EU Emissions Trading System and sector-specific decarbonization targets. Rivan positions itself as both a technology provider and, potentially, a production-scale supplier to meet this structural demand. Its business model is oriented toward large industrial clients, with whom it can build long-term partnerships combining product supply and technical expertise. In a climate-tech landscape dominated by the electrification narrative, Rivan represents a bet on the genuine complexity of the energy transition: not everything will go electric, at least not soon, and whoever successfully serves the hard-to-decarbonize sectors will find an enormous market waiting for them.

The Story

Rivan was created to solve the API infrastructure challenge facing financial institutions. Banks and credit unions wanted to participate in the fintech ecosystem but faced technical and regulatory hurdles in exposing their systems securely. Rivan developed an API-first platform that enables financial institutions to drive innovation partnerships without the complexity.
