Listen to the episodeAbout Neko Health
Neko Health is a Swedish healthtech company founded in 2018 by Daniel Ek and Hjalmar Nilsonne to shift healthcare from reactive treatment towards prevention. Its main product, the Neko Health Scan, combines in-house sensors and medical devices, blood analysis, skin mapping, cardiovascular measurements and an in-person physician review. The radiation-free experience takes about one hour and delivers results during the same appointment. Neko's advantage does not come from a single test. It comes from vertically integrating hardware, software, clinical protocols, physical clinics, physicians, an app and longitudinal data. The first scan creates a baseline, while later visits reveal how skin marks, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and other indicators change over time. This continuity increases customer value and may create a data and operational-learning moat. Commercial demand is already strong. The company reports more than 100,000 completed scans in Sweden and the UK, over 350,000 people registered or waiting, and a 75% rate of members booking and prepaying for the following year's scan at the end of their first appointment. In July 2026 Neko raised a $700 million Series C led by Lightspeed Venture Partners and co-led by O.G. Venture Partners. The Financial Times reported a valuation close to $7 billion. The capital will fund its US entry, beginning in New York, as well as further investment in research, technology and clinical capacity. The long-term clinical case remains unproven. Observational data published by the company shows that it can identify important conditions and that some returning members improved selected health markers, but the evidence does not come from controlled trials. Screening asymptomatic people also carries risks including false positives, overdiagnosis, anxiety and unnecessary follow-up. Neko must therefore prove both that its physical clinic network can scale and that its model improves long-term health outcomes.
The Story
Neko Health was founded in Stockholm in 2018 by Hjalmar Nilsonne and Daniel Ek. After roughly five years developing hardware, software and clinical protocols, it opened its first centre in February 2023.
How Neko Health works
Business Model
A direct-to-consumer model built around proprietary physical clinics and an annual preventive assessment, vertically integrating medical devices, software, an app, clinical protocols and physicians.
Revenue Model

How Neko Health competes
Competitors
Competitive Advantages
- Vertical integration across hardware, software, clinical protocols, physicians and physical clinics.
- Results delivered during the same appointment and explained by a physician.
- A standardised consumer experience lasting about one hour.
- Longitudinal data generated through recurring annual assessments.
- Demonstrated demand and repeat purchase behaviour in European markets.
How Neko Health grows
Growth Strategy
Open standardised US clinics beginning in New York, continue expanding capacity in Sweden and the UK, and develop new devices, wearable integrations and clinical measurements.
Distribution Model
Direct-to-consumer distribution through Neko clinics, digital acquisition and a waitlist, with members booking and prepaying for the following year's scan.
Moat (Defensibility)
Defensibility comes from combining proprietary devices, clinical workflow, a physical clinic network, medical trust, customer experience and a longitudinal dataset. The moat depends on their integration rather than on any single component.
Regulatory Context
Neko combines medical devices, health-data processing and clinical services. Expansion requires compliance with device and healthcare-service rules in each market, as well as personal and health-data protection. Its US rollout will require applicable federal and state approvals.
Key Risks
- False positives, overdiagnosis and unnecessary follow-up when screening asymptomatic people.
- No controlled evidence yet on long-term mortality, disease incidence or healthcare costs.
- High capital intensity associated with opening and operating physical clinics.
- Risk of quality dilution during geographic expansion.
- Different regulatory and clinical-liability requirements across markets.
- Premium positioning may limit accessibility and the promise of mass prevention.
Strategic Insights
- The core innovation is compressing a fragmented medical journey into an integrated one-hour experience.
- Annual recurrence and longitudinal data increase product value and switching costs.
- Owning hardware, software, clinics and clinical delivery strengthens defensibility but raises the cost and complexity of expansion.
- Commercial product-market fit is clear; long-term clinical evidence remains incomplete.
- US expansion will test standardisation, regulation, staffing costs and clinical liability.

Key Metrics
Lessons from Neko Health
- A complex service can scale when it is converted into a repeatable operating format.
- Retention can come from the growing value of a longitudinal data history, not only from a subscription contract.
- In regulated markets, commercial success and evidence of effectiveness must be measured separately.
- Vertical integration creates a moat only when quality remains repeatable during expansion.
