The inspiration is the microscopic riblet structures found on shark skin โ tiny surface features that create a favourable aerodynamic effect as water flows across them, significantly reducing drag. MicroTau's MAKO FlightFilm applies that same principle to the surface of commercial aircraft. It is a drag-reducing surface film that can be applied to the fuselage and wing surfaces of commercial planes, cutting aerodynamic resistance, improving fuel efficiency, and reducing emissions without requiring changes to the aircraft's underlying design or propulsion systems. In an industry where even a one percent improvement in fuel consumption translates into tens of millions of dollars in savings across a large fleet, the commercial proposition is compelling.
