Listen to the episodeAbout Magnax
Magnax is a Belgian deep tech company headquartered in Kortrijk that has developed proprietary axial flux electric motor technology — an architecture that delivers significantly higher power density and torque density compared to conventional radial flux motors at equivalent weight and volume. The axial flux motor geometry has been understood by engineers and studied in academic literature for decades. What Magnax has achieved is solving the industrialization problem that has historically prevented axial flux motors from escaping the laboratory: translating the theoretical performance advantages of the design into a manufacturing process capable of producing motors reliably, consistently, and cost-effectively at commercial volumes, through specific innovations in materials engineering and production methodology that make the difficult geometry manufacturable at scale. The performance advantage matters enormously across a range of applications where the ratio of output power to motor weight and volume is a critical or even limiting design parameter. In electric vehicles — particularly high-performance EVs and electric aircraft — a motor that produces the same torque and power at substantially lower mass and smaller package size opens engineering possibilities that radial flux architectures cannot access. In industrial robotics, lighter and more compact motors enable more agile, more capable robotic joints and more precise actuation at the extremities of robotic arms. In offshore wind turbines, a lighter and more power-dense generator simplifies the nacelle structure, reduces the mechanical loading on towers and foundations, and decreases the cost and complexity of offshore installation and long-term maintenance. For each of these applications, Magnax's technology is not a marginal performance improvement but a potentially category-redefining capability that changes what is physically and economically feasible within given engineering constraints. The strategic backing of Foxconn — the Taiwanese manufacturing giant that assembles a significant portion of the world's smartphones and has made major investments in EV supply chains through its MIH platform — carries industrial meaning that goes well beyond financial validation. It indicates that one of the world's most sophisticated high-volume manufacturers has evaluated Magnax's technology, assessed its manufacturability at commercial scale, and determined it warranted strategic support. That level of industrial sponsorship opens commercial relationships and supply chain integration opportunities that venture capital investment alone cannot provide. With €35.5 million raised, Magnax has entered the industrialization and scale-up phase, transitioning from demonstrated prototype performance to reliable, repeatable manufacturing at the volumes that automotive, robotics, and wind energy customers require. Belgium's established tradition in advanced manufacturing and its concentration of automotive and energy engineering expertise create a favorable operational environment for exactly this technically demanding phase of the company's development.
The Story
Magnax emerged from Belgian academic research in electrical machines at Ghent University, a domain where Belgium has established tradition. The founding team recognized that axial flux motors represented a genuine architectural improvement over conventional motors.
