About Ledger

In the world of cryptocurrencies, the oldest problem is also the least solved: how to securely hold digital assets without relying on third parties that might fail, get hacked, or freeze your funds. Ledger answered that question by building hardware wallets — physical devices that store private keys offline, completely disconnected from the internet. Founded in Paris by Éric Larchevêque and Thomas France, the company turned a niche concept — cold storage — into a mass-market product, with over 6 million devices sold worldwide. The Ledger Nano, in its various versions, has become the de facto standard for self-custodied cryptocurrency storage: a portable, security-by-design device that signs transactions internally without ever exposing private keys to the connected computer. The business model is hybrid: hardware sales with solid margins, combined with Ledger Live, the companion app through which the company offers value-added services including staking, swaps, and direct crypto purchases. This device-plus-software combination builds a continuous user relationship that extends well beyond the initial purchase. Ledger's relevance has grown each time a centralized exchange collapsed — from Mt. Gox to FTX — because every failure reminded investors that not holding your own keys means not truly holding your own assets. As the market becomes larger and more regulated, self-custody has gone mainstream, and Ledger is its global reference point.
