Itsme

Itsme is a Belgian digital identity app launched in 2017, jointly developed by Belgium's leading banks and major telecom operators with the goal of offering a single, secure, nationally recognised digital identity for accessing public and private services, digitally signing documents, and authenticating on hundreds of platforms without passwords. The milestone reached in 2025-2026 is remarkable: for the first time in the app's nearly decade-long history, over 8 million Belgian citizens actively use it — more than 80% of the country's adult population. Use of the digital signature feature grew 55% year-on-year, a signal of citizens' growing trust in entrusting official documents to a fully digital process. On average, each user uses the app across five different platforms. The most significant expansion phase concerns the acquisition of iDIN, the Dutch digital identification service run by banks in the Netherlands, completed at the end of 2025. During 2026, itsme will be progressively rolled out across roughly 300 private Dutch partner websites, with the full transition from iDIN to itsme expected by 2028. The app, born in Belgium, is now active in 30 countries, including markets such as the UK, Norway, and Iceland, with a stated goal of becoming available across all 27 EU countries. Itsme thus positions itself as one of Europe's most successful cases of bank-driven digital identity, at a historic moment when the European Union is introducing the EUDI Wallet, the European digital identity wallet that will redefine sector standards in the coming years.
