About Infobip

From the small coastal town of Vodnjan in Croatia emerged one of the world's largest enterprise communication platforms. Infobip was founded by Silvio Kutić, Roberto Kutić, and Izabel Jelenić in a geographic context that would have discouraged many — far from the main European tech hubs, with a limited local market — but which proved to be an advantage: the need to look at international markets from day one shaped a global mindset from the start. The platform offers omnichannel communications — SMS, email, WhatsApp, RCS, voice, chat — on proprietary infrastructure, a distinguishing element compared to many competitors that resell third-party capacity. Owning its infrastructure means greater control over quality, latency, and costs, with points of presence in dozens of countries that ensure reliability even in the most challenging geographies. Infobip's customers are banks, retail operators, telecommunications companies, and service businesses that require critical communications — transaction notifications, two-factor authentication, marketing communications — with high delivery guarantees. The pay-as-you-go model, alongside subscriptions for larger enterprises, enabled scaling to over 60 countries. Infobip remained private and self-funded for many years, choosing sustainable growth over the rapid pace fueled by venture capital. This choice allowed it to build a profitable company with a different risk profile from competitors that burned capital in the name of market share.

Strategic Insights

  • Building a global telecommunications and messaging network from scratch in a small European market requires exceptional capital discipline and operational focus — Infobip's bootstrapped growth is a rare case study.
  • Enterprise communication platforms benefit from network effects at the carrier and operator level — connecting more mobile networks increases delivery reliability, which is the primary decision criterion for enterprise customers.
  • Expanding from raw SMS aggregation into a full CPaaS (communications platform as a service) with WhatsApp, RCS, and conversational AI increases average revenue per customer and reduces churn.

Lessons from Infobip

  • Bootstrapping a capital-intensive B2B infrastructure business is possible if unit economics are positive from the early stages — don't assume venture capital is required for infrastructure plays.
  • Global presence requires physical offices and local regulatory relationships — remote-only doesn't work for telecom partnerships that require in-person trust.
  • Scaling from 3 people in a Croatian coastal town to a global enterprise required obsessive focus on reliability — uptime is the only metric that truly matters in communication infrastructure.
