EP39 - Ecosystem Spotlight - Why London generates so many startups (and unicorns)
Listen to the episodeAbout GoCardless
Hiroki Takeuchi, Matt Robinson, and Tom Blomfield founded GoCardless in London with an elemental observation: recurring bank-debit payments โ the mechanism businesses use to collect monthly subscriptions โ were unnecessarily complex, expensive, and fragmented for small and medium enterprises. Setting up a direct debit mandate required direct relationships with banks, contracts with payment schemes like Bacs in the UK, and technical infrastructure that most companies lacked. GoCardless reduced the whole process to a few lines of code and a handful of clicks. GoCardless's positioning in the payments market is deliberate and specific. It does not compete with Stripe or Adyen on card payments. Instead, it owns the niche of recurring bank-to-bank payments โ direct debit in the UK and Europe, ACH in the United States, PAD in Canada. For subscription businesses, bank debit carries structural economic advantages over card payments: lower transaction costs, no card expiry-driven churn, lower fraud exposure, and โ in categories like utilities and insurance โ an established customer preference. The platform now operates in more than 30 countries, having built direct connectivity to the local bank payment infrastructure in each market. That network of direct connections is GoCardless's most significant barrier to entry: building it required years of regulatory and technical work jurisdiction by jurisdiction, and replicating it is not a trivial undertaking for any new competitor. The business model is SaaS with per-transaction fees: companies pay a percentage of each payment processed, with volume-based enterprise plans for larger customers. The target customer base spans SaaS companies with monthly subscriptions, gyms, utility providers, insurance companies, lending platforms, and any business with recurring revenue and a customer base that pays on a regular schedule. GoCardless reached a valuation of 2.1 billion dollars and stands as one of Europe's clearest examples of a startup that found a specific angle in the payments market and defended it with both technical depth and regulatory persistence.
