Modern warehouses have a density problem: the more products you want to store, the more space you need, and space is expensive. Traditional automation systems solve part of the problem but are costly, rigid, and difficult to scale. Exotec approached this challenge from a different angle: building lightweight, fast, autonomous robots that move in three dimensions — including vertically — to retrieve the bins containing products, bring them to picking stations, and return them with millimeter precision. The system is called Skypod, and it is what turned Exotec into France's first deeptech startup to reach unicorn status in robotics. Founded in Croix, in the Lille region, by Romain Moulin and Renaud Heitz, Exotec bet on a modular architecture: robots and shelving units can be added or removed based on client needs without rebuilding the entire installation. This makes Skypod suitable for mid-sized operations as well as large logistics hubs that need to scale quickly. The business model combines the sale of robotic systems with long-term maintenance contracts, generating recurring revenue. Customers are retailers, logistics operators, and pharmaceutical companies that need to manage large numbers of SKUs with high variability. Exotec is concrete proof that European deeptech hardware can compete at the global frontier when it starts from a real problem, solves it with ingenuity, and builds a sustainable commercial model.
