Renewable energy has a structural problem that rarely gets the attention it deserves: electricity generation from wind and solar is intermittent and frequently misaligned with demand peaks. During periods of strong wind or full solar irradiance, the grid can find itself in surplus — renewable energy wasted or sold at negative prices just to clear it. Exergy3, an Edinburgh-based startup, identified this surplus as a concrete industrial opportunity. The company converts excess renewable electricity into clean industrial heat, covering a thermal range between 50°C and 1,200°C. That range is particularly significant: the vast majority of industrial processes — ceramics manufacturing, metalworking, fine chemicals, food production — require heat within this interval, and today they get it by burning natural gas. Exergy3 offers a pathway to defossilize process heat, one of the hardest segments of industrial manufacturing to decarbonize. The technology sits within a rapidly shifting market context. The cost of renewable electricity has collapsed over the past decade, making it increasingly attractive as a feedstock for industrial thermal processes. At the same time, gas price volatility and growing industrial decarbonization incentives are pushing manufacturing companies to actively explore alternatives. Exergy3's business model targets thermally intensive industries as direct clients, with systems installed on-site or in proximity to renewable generation assets. Compared to conventional energy storage solutions, industrial heat has the advantage of being a commodity already well understood by industrial clients, requiring no radical changes to existing production processes. Edinburgh is a logical home base for this business: Scotland is among the European regions with the highest penetration of renewable energy, particularly offshore wind, meaning frequent surpluses and marginal electricity costs that regularly approach zero — exactly the conditions that make Exergy3's proposition most compelling.
