About Carbyon
Carbyon is a Dutch startup founded in 2019 as a spin-off of TNO โ the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research โ specialising in Direct Air Capture (DAC) of COโ from the atmosphere. Carbyon's technology differentiates itself from conventional DAC systems by using high-efficiency solid sorbent materials: the system captures COโ using significantly less energy than liquid-based processes, reducing the primary obstacle to DAC scalability โ the cost per tonne of COโ removed. Progress toward industrial scale is accelerating. In September 2024, Carbyon closed a โฌ15.3 million Series A, bringing total investment to over $27 million; in July 2025, it announced a strategic extension with participation from ISAI Build Venture (co-founded with Bouygues), which brings critical process engineering expertise for system scale-up. In 2025, Carbyon also won the $1M Milestone Award from the XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition and was selected as one of 12 companies for a COโ capture pilot programme in Canada. Carbyon positions itself in the emerging permanent carbon removal market, which scientific research and companies with net-zero commitments identify as indispensable for achieving global climate targets. DAC complements nature-based solutions like agricultural carbon credits: where natural offsets have permanence limitations, DAC offers verifiable and potentially permanent geological storage.
