EP48 โ Unicorn Files โ Allica Bank: the operating system of relationship banking
Listen to the episodeAbout Allica Bank
Allica Bank is a story about winning in a market that everyone ignored for too long. Not startups, not big banks, not challenger fintechs โ established British SMEs, companies with 5 to 250 employees, real turnover, tangible assets, and a banking relationship that had oscillated between indifference and bureaucracy for decades. They were the great undiscovered market of European fintech. Originally founded as Civilised Bank in 2018, the company rebranded as Allica in 2019 and received its banking licence the same year. The pivot was clear from the start: not another consumer neobank, not another tool for freelancers and startups, but a bank designed for established SMEs โ the ones big banks treat as second-tier customers and challenger fintechs ignore because they're too complex to serve. The operational turning point came in 2020 with the arrival of Richard Davies as CEO. A veteran of RBS and Atom Bank, Davies brought a clear thesis: relationship banking isn't dead, it's just deteriorated. Big banks eliminated relationship managers in pursuit of efficiency. Allica puts them back at the centre, but with a radical upgrade: proprietary technology stack, faster processes, software integrations, and real-time data. Not nostalgia for old banking, but relationship banking powered by technology. A key milestone came in 2021 when Allica acquired an SME portfolio from AIB comprising around 2,000 customers and ยฃ600 million in lending. By 2022, the company had migrated over 1,400 customers and 1,700 loans onto its own platform โ a rare execution feat for a young challenger bank. The Business Rewards Account, launched to become the primary account for SME customers, surpassed 6,000 customers by end-2024 and 14,000 by end-2025, a 133% increase in twelve months. The numbers speak for themselves. In 2024, Allica closed with ยฃ29.9 million in pre-tax profit, ยฃ293 million in gross revenue, ยฃ3 billion in lending and over ยฃ4 billion in deposits. In 2025 the results accelerated: ยฃ371 million in gross revenue, ยฃ3.7 billion in lending, ยฃ5.7 billion in deposits, and ยฃ43.7 million in underlying pre-tax profit. A profitable growth trajectory that very few European challenger banks can match. The business model is straightforward: Allica earns primarily on net interest margin between lending rates applied to SMEs and the cost of funding. But the real differentiation is not on price โ it's on service quality. Every customer has a dedicated relationship manager, accessible and genuinely useful. When you are an SME's primary bank account, you accumulate more data, build stronger retention, and create more cross-selling opportunities. In February 2026, Allica closed a $155 million Series D, reaching a valuation close to $1.2 billion and officially crossing the unicorn threshold. At the time of the round, it was serving over 30,000 business customers, with market penetration already above 6% in its target segment and a stated goal of 10% by 2028. Allica Bank demonstrates something important for anyone building a B2B company: the most interesting markets are not always the loudest ones. They're the overlooked, enormous, and difficult-to-serve-well ones. The difficulty itself becomes the moat.
