About You was founded in 2014 in Hamburg as a spin-off of the Otto Group — one of Europe's largest mail-order retail conglomerates — with an ambitious idea: build an online fashion shopping experience personalised around the user's identity, not the product catalogue. The very name reflects this philosophy: the brand is built around you. In a decade, the platform expanded to 26 European countries, surpassing €2 billion in annual GMV and building robust technology infrastructure to manage personalisation at scale through machine learning and behavioural analytics. About You went public on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in June 2021 at an approximate valuation of €4 billion — one of Germany's largest tech IPOs that year. Its strategy was defined by a heavy emphasis on influencer marketing and community-building: the platform cultivated relationships with thousands of European creators who drove qualified traffic and trust among younger demographics, setting it apart from more traditional competitors like Zalando. In July 2025, Zalando completed its acquisition of About You for approximately €1.2 billion (€6.5 per share), consolidating its dominant position in European fashion e-commerce. About You continues to operate as an independent brand within the Zalando group.
