Fresha
Fresha (formerly Shedul) was founded in 2015 with a starting hypothesis: beauty salons need cheaper booking software. The team conducted dozens of interviews with salon owners before writing a line of code.
The most surprising insight from customer discovery was not about price. It was about friction: existing software (Mindbody, Vagaro) had been designed by people who had never run a salon. It required hours of training, was slow on mobile devices and had interfaces designed for administrators, not for stylists moving between clients.
The team discovered this pattern through a specific technique: physically shadowing salon owners through a working day. Not asking "what would you want from software?" — observing how they used (and abandoned) existing tools. The most revealing data point: most salon owners reverted to pen and paper after trying digital software.
This completely redefined the product. Fresha built an interface that could be used with one hand, between clients, in under 30 seconds per booking. Simplicity was the product, not a feature.
Result: Fresha is today the world's most widely used salon booking platform by free users. Customer discovery identified the real differentiator long before the product existed.
The most effective customer discovery is not asking questions — it is observing real user behaviour with the tools they already use. The gap between what they say and what they do is where the opportunity lies.
