There are moments in history when a geopolitical megatrend reshapes entire industrial sectors within a few years. Russia's invasion of Ukraine did exactly this to European defence: it transformed the drone from a technological curiosity into a strategic asset, and opened an unprecedented window of opportunity for startups capable of moving fast.

STARK Defence was founded in Munich in 2024 — not by chance, but by design. Co-founders Florian Seibel, previously founder of Quantum Systems, and Johannes Schaback recognised before most others that Europe was entering an era of accelerated rearmament, and that autonomous weapons systems would become the cornerstone of the new military doctrine. The problem to solve was clear: European armed forces needed intelligent strike drones, built in Europe, with rapid iteration cycles that traditional defence contractors were structurally incapable of delivering.

STARK's model applies the logic of software companies to military hardware: modular design, fast iteration, continuously evolving AI software. STARK drones are not simple unmanned aerial vehicles — they are autonomous systems capable of operating in swarms, coordinating in real time, and adapting to dynamic battlefield scenarios. Artificial intelligence is not a layer added on top of an existing product; it is the core of the architecture.

Validation came quickly. In August 2025, Sequoia Capital led a $62 million round at a $500 million valuation — a remarkable figure for a startup less than two years old. The round included Thiel Capital, the NATO Innovation Fund, In-Q-Tel (the CIA's venture arm), Project A and Döpfner Capital: a pool of investors that signals, by itself, the strategic nature of the asset.

Then, in early 2026, came the defining leap: a new round pushed the valuation above €1 billion, with participation from Founders Fund, Peter Thiel's VC firm. STARK became an official unicorn. But the real news is not the valuation — it is the contract: the Bundeswehr announced a €2.4 billion agreement with STARK for strike drone procurement, with €280 million to be purchased directly in 2026. For a two-year-old startup, this is a scaling trajectory that rarely occurs in European tech.

What makes STARK an extraordinary case study for founders is the combination of timing, execution speed and a deep understanding of geopolitical context. Large defence primes — Airbus, Rheinmetall, Leonardo — cannot move with the speed the current operational environment demands. STARK can, because it thinks like a software company: prototype fast, test in the field, iterate. The approach is Palantir and Anduril applied to European drone hardware.

The question many are asking is whether this trajectory can be replicated across other segments of defence tech. STARK's example suggests yes: when a geopolitical megatrend aligns with genuine technological capability and a team able to scale rapidly, the typical barriers to entry in regulated markets can be overcome. Capital follows strategy, not the other way around.
