EP38 - Fintech Frontier - Qonto: From Payment Institution to Strategic Bank
About this episode
Qonto is a finance management solution for SMEs and freelancers: business account, expense management, invoicing, integrated bookkeeping. In July 2025 it submitted a banking license application to French ACPR while already serving 600,000+ customers across 8 European markets and reporting profitability achieved in 2023.
Founded in Paris in 2016 by Alexandre Prot and Steve Anavi, Qonto chose to compete in a segment ignored by traditional banks and the first wave of neobanks: small and medium-sized enterprises, freelancers and independent professionals who need serious financial tools but don't want the costs and complexities of corporate banking. The difference versus Revolut Business or N26 Business? Deep integration with operational workflow: expenses are automatically categorized, invoices generated and sent from the same app, accounting synced with major management software.
In this episode we analyze the "layered credit" strategy with the Pay Later product, the real meaning of obtaining a banking license for the ability to build proprietary credit products, and the comparison with strategies of Revolut, Stripe and incumbents like BNP Paribas in the SME segment. We discuss why the real moat in European B2B is integration: banking and operational tools in the same workflow. You'll learn how Qonto is building the financial layer for the European SMEs of the future.
What you learn from this episode
