About this episode

Back Market doesn't sell used. It sells the feeling of buying "without anxiety". How the French startup standardized quality, warranty and trust in refurbished devices, transforming a fragmented and distrustful market into a premium experience that competes with new โ€” and is winning.

Founded in 2014 in Paris by Thibaud Hug de Larauze, Vianney Vaute and Quentin Le Brouster, Back Market starts from the observation that billions of perfectly functional smartphones, laptops and tablets are thrown away or left in drawers because buying refurbished is perceived as risky. The solution wasn't selling cheaper products โ€” it was building trust through rigorous quality standards, unified warranties (12 months), and customer service that solves every problem without questions.

In this episode we analyze the strategy that brought Back Market from Series E of 510 million dollars to a 5.7 billion dollar valuation, the creation of the "Premium" tier (about 20% of sales) that raises average order value and positions refurbished alongside new, the launch of repair service and first physical stores in New York as acquisition channels and supply chain for trade-in. We discuss the impact of the European Right to Repair โ€” guaranteed spare parts for 7 years, updates for 5, batteries for 800 cycles โ€” as regulatory tailwind. An episode on how to build a premium brand in a market where "premium" was impossible.
